Thor Island is an island off the Danco coast of Graham Land in the north of the Antarctic Peninsula . It is the northernmost island in a small group of islands on the east side of Foyn Harbor in Wilhelmina Bay .
Whalers who had operated in these waters between 1921 and 1922 named them South Thor Island as a counterpart to the northeastern sister island North Thor Island . Both islands are named after the whaling ship Thor I , which ran aground here at that time. The UK Antarctic Place-Names Committee decided in 1960 to shorten the name of the island described here and to abolish that of North Thor Island .
