A thorax deformity , also a thorax deformation or thorax deformation , is a form of the chest or chest wall that deviates from the norm. It can be congenital or acquired.

By far the most common of these changes is the funnel chest with a sunken sternum (90%).

If this is bulging, one speaks of a keel chest (7%). The Harrenstein deformity is a special form with a twisted sternum .

An incomplete fusion of the sternum structures leads to a sternum cleft (1%). An incomplete closure of the thorax in the embryo is called a thoracoshisis.

Circumscribed asymmetry of the anterior chest wall can be caused by a forked rib .

An association with the Ehlers-Danlos syndrome and chondrodysplasias such as the metaphyseal chondrodysplasia type Jansen has been reported.

Chest deformity can occur in the context of syndromes:

A pronounced chest deformity can result in atelectasis or chronic respiratory failure .
