The Thorvald Ellegaard Arena , also Odense Cykelbane Arena is a sports hall with velodrome in Danish Odense .

history

On July 25, 1948, an open cycling track was opened in Odense; it was the home track of the cycling club Cykling Odense . The Junior World Track Championships in 1988 and the national championships in 2004 were held on this track . Since the cycling track was then in a bad condition, the municipality of Odense planned from 2006 to have it demolished and the site to be built on.

After years of discussions in the community, it was decided to build a covered hall with a cycling track in a public-private partnership instead of the previous track. In their interior, devices for other sports were provided, including athletics . In autumn 2012, 73 million Danish kroner were made available for the project. The arena was named after the six-time sprint world champion Thorvald Ellegaard (1877-1954). It is located in Odense Idrætspark , next to a football stadium , a gym , an athletics stadium, ice rinks , a bowling alley and a cricket stadium . The arena was officially inaugurated on January 16, 2015. In the meantime, several Danish and Norwegian track championships have been held here, as well as the Nordic championships in 2017 and 2019. In October 2017, the 18-year-old racing driver Mikkel Bjerg set a new Danish hour record on the track with 52.311 kilometers.

construction

According to the guidelines of the World Cycling Association UCI, the cycling track itself is 250 meters long, with a curve superelevation of 42 degrees. The running tracks are 200 meters long. Since the hall was intended purely as a training facility, there are no seats for spectators. The 7200 square meter arena is covered with a 13,200 large roof made of semi-transparent, feather-light textile fabric; Rainwater is collected on this roof and channeled into a nearby lake. Their unusual external shape is sometimes compared to a donut , sometimes to a turtle . In 2016, the Thorvald Ellegaard Arena received a special mention at the Architizer Awards .

Miscellaneous

The club Cykling Odense , which organizes Denmark's oldest cycling race, the Fyen Rundt , has its headquarters in the arena.
