Through the Past, Darkly (Big Hits Vol. 2) Let It Bleed
(1969)

Through the Past, Darkly (Big Hits Vol. 2) is, after Big Hits (High Tide and Green Grass) , the second official compilation of the Rolling Stones to be released in England , released on September 12, 1969, shortly after the death of Brian Jones on July 3, 1969 and shortly before the start of their three-week US tour on November 7, 1969, which ended on November 30. Her live album Get Yer Ya-Ya's Out! . The next studio album, Let It Bleed , was released on November 29th in the US and on December 5th in Europe while the tour was still in progress. A day later, the Stones were still playing at the Altamont Free Concert , while a spectator was stabbed in a knife right in front of the stage during their performance. Her last tour of the USA was already more than three years ago.

Once again when the Rolling Stones released, the American and British versions differ. The British version also contains older songs published before 1966, otherwise both editions contain releases that were previously only available as singles, such as Jumpin 'Jack Flash or Let's Spend the Night Together . Some pieces appear for the first time as stereophonic versions. The songs included were recorded between August 1963 and June 1969.

The compilation was a great commercial success for the band both in England and the USA with No. 2 on the album charts and in Germany (No. 13). The single Honky Tonk Women had already been released on July 4, 1969 , a number 1 hit in England and the USA. In Germany the release reached number 2 in the singles charts.

On the inside of both record sleeves there are the following words dedicated to Brian Jones: "When this you see, remember me / and bear me in your mind / Let all the world say what they may, / speak of me as you find". These lines can also be read in the booklet of the US version of Through the Past, Darkly (Big Hits Vol. 2) , which was newly released in August 2002 as Super Audio Compact Disc (SACD) , the English version of the album is currently not available in stores .

When it was first released, an LP with a hinged octagonal cover was released in a limited edition, now a coveted collector's item.

The album title is supposedly inspired by the English translation of the New Testament , here it says in the 1st letter of Paul to the Corinthians in chapters 13.12: “For now we see through a glass, darkly” (“We see through a mirror now in a dark word ”). More likely, however, is the assumption that the album title refers to the film Wie in einer Spiegel (English title: "Through a Glass Darkly") by the Swedish director Ingmar Bergman from 1961, who in turn refers to the Bible quote.
