Thundarr the Barbarian

Thundarr the Barbarian is an animated series that was produced in the United States in 1980/1981 . The action is set in a post-apocalyptic world in which both technical relics and fantastic elements occur. The series was never translated into German.

In 1994 the moon was destroyed, resulting in a cataclysm on earth. Two thousand years later, only ruins are reminiscent of the civilization that was then lost. The surviving people live together in small groups. Some of them have access to technical devices that have been preserved over the centuries. There are also magicians with fantastic powers who exercise political power.

The main character of the series is the barbaric warrior Thundarr, who travels the world. With the help of his magic sword ( Sunsword ) he can assist people in the fight against evil wizards. He is accompanied by Princess Ariel, a beautiful magician, and Ookla the Mok , a lion-like humanoid .

The series was conceived by Steve Gerber, creator of Howard the Duck . The main characters were designed by the comic artist Alex Toth , the villains and secondary characters by his colleague Jack Kirby . One of the writers on the series was Mark Evanier . Was produced Thundarr the Barbarian by Joe Ruby and Ken Spears, two former employees of Hanna-Barbera . Spokespersons for the main characters were Robert Ridgely (Thundarr), Nellie Bellflower (Ariel) and Henry Corden (Ookla).

The series ran from October 1980 to September 1982 on the American TV station ABC . A total of 23 episodes were produced.
