The Thurn and Taxis post office in abundance

The Thurn- und Taxis'sche Posthalterei (also: Alte Posthalterei ) is a listed building in the center of the city of Mengen on the corner of Hauptstrasse and Pfarrstrasse. The building, which is particularly noticeable due to its beautiful half-timbering , dates from 1702.

history

The house as we know it today dates from 1740. However, dendrochronological studies have shown that the beams on the ground floor and the first floor were cut in the winter of 1701. The building was initially two-story and two-part. From the beginning it housed a post office , as well as the poster's apartment and an inn. Also coaches remise was in the building. In 1740 the first floor and the first floor were merged and a third floor and an attic were added.

A post stop must have existed in abundance before the building was built, as it was mentioned in 1686 as the “Post stop of the Thurn and Taxis line ”. The building served as a post office until 1911.

present

Today the old post office houses the local history museum of the city of Mengen. In addition to documents and exhibits from the city's history, the museum also shows sculptures by Upper Swabian masters from different epochs, as well as works by regional artists. Among other things, works by Gottfried Graf are on display. The local history museum goes back to an initiative of the Mengening citizens who founded an antiquity association in 1889 . The collection of this association became the property of the city in 1925. After many exhibits were lost in World War II, 70 percent of the current collection was only brought together in the post-war years. The exhibition area is around 800 m². The museum was renamed “Alte Posthalterei - Stadtmuseum Mengen” in 2012, and the renovation of the ground floor was completed on June 30, 2012.

In 2012, an architect scientifically investigated the building history of the house in Mengener Hauptstrasse on behalf of the city of Mengen in cooperation with the State Office for Monument Preservation . The city of Mengen hopes that this study will provide a "good basis for the upcoming comprehensive renovation."
