Tides of Time (Polish original title: Poprzez wieki ) is a card game by game designer Kristian Čurla for two people. The game was published in 2015 by the Polish publisher Portal Games and was marketed internationally shortly afterwards. In German-speaking countries, it was also published by Pegasus Spiele in 2015 as Tides of Time: Im Strom der Zeit . The game is a strategic drafting game with only 18 cards, in which the players try to get the most valuable combinations of cards possible and win in this way.
In 2016, Tides of Madness: Waves of Madness, a sequel to the game with a Cthulhu theme, was released, in which the original game mechanism was added as an additional component of madness markers, which can lead to an early elimination of one or both players.
Theme and equipment
The game is a strategic contest between two players to achieve the best possible card display in order to receive a maximum number of points in each of the three ratings of the game. As a game mechanic, the cards are drafted, so both players choose a card for the display from a hand of cards distributed at the beginning and then give the rest of the cards to the opponent.
The Tide of Time game material consists of 18 large-format cards on which buildings or other topics are illustrated. These cards are assigned to five different topics by symbols and each indicate a condition for achieving a specified number of victory points or a modification of the scoring. There are also four markers that are used to mark cards in the display from the first two rounds.
Style of play
The games Tides of Time and the successor Tides of Madness are both played in the same way as a drafting game and differ on the one hand thematically and on the other hand through the additional madness markers in Tides of Madness .
Tides of Time
To prepare for the game, all 18 playing cards are shuffled, then both players receive 5 cards each and the remaining cards are discarded as a face-down draw pile.
Order of action
|
Tides of Time is played over three rounds of five cards each. At the beginning each of the two players selects a card from his hand and places it face down in front of him, he passes the remaining cards on to his opponent. Then both cards are turned over at the same time and one more card is selected from the four cards left per player and discarded. This happens until both players have their five cards in front of each other.
The next phase is the evaluation, in which each player evaluates his cards one after the other. The cards indicate the conditions under which the player receives victory points:
- by cards of a symbol type,
- by majorities of a symbol type, and
- by combining several symbols.
The victory points are written down, then each player takes the five cards of the round back into hand and chooses one card each that is laid out permanently and one that is removed from the game. Then each player marks the card of the permanent display with a corresponding marker. The remaining three cards remain in the hand of the player who draws two more cards and thus again has a complete hand of five cards.
The second and third round take place in the same way as the first round, with the game ending in the third round after the scoring phase. The player who has the most points according to this scoring wins the game.
Tides of Madness
Tides of Madness is played by the same rules as Tides of Time . To prepare for the game, the madness markers are also placed in the center of the game. In contrast to its predecessor, the cards in this case are illustrated with beings, places and other scenes from the Cthulhu myth .
In each scoring phase of Tides of Madness , the cards on display are checked for cards with tentacle illustrations. For each of these cards the respective player receives a madness marker. If a player has nine or more of these markers at any point in the game, he immediately loses the game.
Development and reception
The game Tides of Madness was developed by the game designer Kristian Čurla and was published in 2015 by the Polish publisher Portal Games as an edition in Polish and English. In the same year it was published internationally by several other publishers. In Germany it was published by Pegasus Spiele as Tides of Time: Im Strom der Zeit.
Due to the success of Tides of Time , Čurla released Tides of Madness, a sequel to the game with a Cthulhu theme, in 2016 . This was also published internationally.
