The underground bunker Berlinertordamm is an underground air raid shelter from the Second World War . It is located in the Hamburg district of Borgfelde in a small green area not far from the Berliner Tor S-Bahn station .

It was originally built from 1940 as part of the immediate air raid protection program and offered protection to around 800 people from the surrounding districts during the air raids on Hamburg . During the Cold War , from 1960 to 1963, it was expanded to be the first public civil protection bunker in what was then the Federal Republic of Germany to be "nuclear safe" - with space for 450 people.

The circular structure has a diameter of 20 meters, extends about 10 meters underground and has three floors in which several bedrooms and lounges as well as toilets are housed. The system has two separate entrances, air filters, an oil heater and an emergency power supply .

The underground bunker is still subject to civil protection and is also a listed building. The “Unter Hamburg” association regularly offers guided tours through the building.
