Hans Tienes (born May 6, 1906 in Wesel ; † May 15, 2004 there ) was a German entrepreneur and promoter of culture. He played an important role in the reconstruction of the Willibrordi Cathedral in Wesel and was made an honorary citizen of the city in 1995.

Career

Tienes had a doctorate in engineering and worked full-time at the Wesel mineral grinding plant in Welsch. In January 1935 he registered a process for the production of abrasive grains at the patent office. The Welsch company was already owned by a family member and Tienes himself became an entrepreneur.

In 1947 he co-founded the cathedral building association in Wesel, which campaigned for the reconstruction of Willibrordi Cathedral, which was badly damaged in World War II . He was also represented on the first board and exercised the office of treasurer, which he held until 1989. In addition, he worked from 1952 to 1973 as chairman of the Wesel Music Society. In his function as treasurer of the cathedral building association, he financed upcoming work in advance in many cases with personal financial risk. During his 42 years of activity, a large number of projects were implemented in the construction of the cathedral. Even at the end of his term of office, he continued to support the association and in 1994, together with his wife, made it possible to purchase a carillon . The carillon represented a completely new element of the cathedral construction and historically never existed until then.

As early as 1981 he was awarded the ring of honor by the city of Wesel for his work as a cultural sponsor. On September 10, 1995, at the age of 89, Tienes was made an honorary citizen of the city. This recognized his great importance in the reconstruction of the cathedral, his longstanding activity as chairman of the music association and his role as co-founder of the youth music and art school.
