Animal Friends is a TV series by Schweizer Fernsehen and Schweizer Radio und Fernsehen . The show tells stories about animals and their owners. The series doubled the number of viewers within the first eight weeks of its first broadcast and in January 2011 achieved a market share of around 18% per program in Access prime time on SF 1 from 6.15 p.m. to 275,000 viewers.
Episodes and broadcast dates
The first season with 9 episodes was first broadcast in late August 2010. Due to the audience success, the show was continued in the winter of 2010/2011 without interruption with a second season in the form of another 9 episodes. The 3rd season started on August 28, 2011. The 4th season of the series started on April 22, 2012. The 5th season aired from December 2, 2012. Seasons 6 and 7 followed in late autumn 2013 and late autumn 2014. Season 8 started in November 2015. A 9th season is being planned.
Structure and themes
In seasons 1 to 3, the animal stories were told using the dramaturgical means of the docusoap . From season 4, Tierische Freunde was redesigned in the form of a moderated TV magazine program . The moderator is Nina Havel . While in season 1 mainly stories of pets from the areas of everyday life, work and veterinary medicine were told, from season 2 zoo animals and regular portraits of pets at the vet were also included in the series. From season 4, tips from professionals for pet owners will also be increasingly included in the program. In season 5, a category "Animal of the Week" was included for the first time.
For the re-broadcast, individual episodes of season 2 were reworked and supplemented with sequences by presenter Nina Havel.

The collaboration of Tanja Gutmann as editor in the production of the series was widely communicated by the press in the run-up to the broadcast.
Follow-up broadcast
The series was replaced in 2017 after 8 seasons and 72 episodes by the new format animal stories with Monika and Filou.
