history

Expansion of the zoo

The businessman Günter Busch, who founded the Bad Pyrmont Zoo, was the owner of a car dealership on Südstraße. In 1962 he leased another piece of land in addition to his repair shop, on which he set up a bird and nature park. For the first two years, the park was only open to visitors for three months in the summer. In 1964 the zoo was released as a public zoo in its current size of 30,000 square meters following prescribed renovation measures. After it was leased in 1972, the zoo was expanded into a zoo with native and exotic species. But after the tenants left in 1978, the park ran into trouble. In 1984 the continued existence of the zoo was secured by the establishment of a support group, which was continued in 1999 by the "Association for Animal and Species Protection Bad Pyrmont eV", which existed until May 24, 2012.

Cafe Siamang

In October 2008, Linus Kampe took over the zoo as the new operator. He took care of the fundamental modernization of the park. Not only was there a realignment of the animal population, all paths and beds were given a new face, and miniature worlds were created.

Some species such as rhea and anubis baboon were given up. New species such as barbary macaques , eland antelopes , Siamangs and striped skunks moved in . Many of the existing systems were given a new look and additional systems were built. In May 2010, the reptile house was reopened after a five-month renovation phase, a new petting area was created, and there is a small restaurant at the modernized playground. A walk-in Australian aviary has existed since June 2011, where visitors can come into close contact with Australian parakeets. A zoo school was also built in the park.

The park shows some species rarely kept in zoos. It is the only zoo in Germany that keeps giant velvet geckos (Madagascar giant gecko, Homopholis boivini ). He is also one of the four German keepers of the subspecies- pure South Brazilian coati ( Nasua nasua solitaria ).

In mid-August 2012, parts of the zoo area - u. a. the entire entrance and class area - canceled on October 1, 2013. A new entrance building with a handicapped-accessible revolving gate was then built. The new zoo café with visitor toilets and operating rooms with cold store, freezer, feed kitchen and a lounge for the zoo keepers as well as their toilet and shower are located on the ground floor. The new apartment for Linus Kampe's family is on the first floor of the new building.

The new entrance area was officially opened on July 20, 2013.

Livestock

The Bad Pyrmont Zoo tries to present a balanced mixture of domestic and exotic domestic and wild animals despite its relatively small area. The current animal population therefore includes:

Conservation breeding

The zoo is involved in the conservation breeding of hyacinth macaws .

criticism

The program Team Wallraff , which was broadcast on RTL on August 31, 2015 , addressed the zoo and criticized above all grievances: Many animals made an unkempt impression. The zoo then stated that this was not due to poor care, but to the age of the animals. In addition, animals are killed after they are born as they are of no use to the park. The individual keeping of a chimpanzee was also criticized. Keeping a single chimpanzee is considered inappropriate in Germany and is prohibited - the responsible veterinary office took measures in the park. According to the zoo, it was not possible to return the animal earlier.

In response to the reports, the park's Facebook presence was temporarily unavailable because the zoo received numerous death threats. This triggered a wave of solidarity on the part of local politicians.
