The hyacinth macaw ( Anodorhynchus hyacinthinus ) is a parrot from the genus of blue macaws ( Anodorhynchus ).

description

Hyacinth macaws are around 1 meter long and weigh 1.5 kg, rarely up to 1.7 kg, the parrot species with the greatest body length; the second heaviest in weight after the kakapo . The plumage is uniformly cobalt blue, the featherless skin around the eyes and on the lower beak is bright yellow. The number of toes of the macaw is four. With the help of their beak, the hyacinth macaws are agile climbers.

distribution

Distribution area (2011)

Hyacinth macaws are found in South America ( Brazil , Paraguay ). Their habitat is the tropical rainforest . They are sociable birds and live in small family groups consisting of several pairs and their young.

food

Hyacinth macaws feed on seeds , nuts, and other hard-shelled fruits . These are easily cracked with the help of the powerful beak. The hyacinth macaw feeds mainly in trees, but it also picks up fallen fruit and nuts from the ground. He goes looking for food in the morning and evening hours.

Reproduction

During the breeding season, from July to September, the pairs withdraw from the family association. Hyacinth macaws live monogamous and stay together for a lifetime. Tree hollows are the preferred breeding grounds. The female lays 2 to 3 eggs in the nest, which is guarded by the female throughout the breeding season, while the male looks for food. The breeding season is about 24 days, the rearing of the young birds about 90 days. As a rule, only one young animal survives the nestling period. Initially, the young hyacinth macaws are naked and blind. The young animals reach sexual maturity at 3 years of age. Life expectancy in captivity is up to 90 years, in freedom it is around 25 years.

Duration

Their population is threatened, but there are three larger areas where hyacinth macaws can be found in their ancestral habitat. Its high value as an ornamental bird has significantly decimated the hyacinth macaw population, so that it is now one of the threatened birds. The IUCN ( International Union for Conservation of Nature ; German "International Union for the Preservation of Nature") classifies it as "endangered" (VU - vulnerable ). The offspring succeeds more and more often due to better research.
