The Zoological Garden Eberswalde (formerly Tierpark Eberswalde ) is a zoo on the southern edge of the city of Eberswalde in Brandenburg . It was founded in 1958 and is approximately 15 hectares in size. The beginnings of the facility go back to the wildlife park founded at the same location in 1928 . This was operated by an excursion restaurant and destroyed in the Second World War.

With around 1500 animals from five continents in 140 species, the zoo is the second largest in Brandenburg and was visited by 280,000 guests in 2005. For 2008 the number is given as 250,000 visitors annually.

The zoo is located in a forest area about 40 kilometers northeast of Berlin and is home to native animals as well as exotic animals such as tigers, cheetahs, parrots, camels, flamingos, kangaroos, penguins and monkeys. There is a tropical house as well as an enclosure for lions , into which the visitor, protected by thick glass panes, can enter directly through a tunnel. Bears and wolves share an enclosure.

Award

In July 2000, the zoological garden completed the large zoo test of the Illustrierte Stern with the rating “First class” (grade 1.83) as the highest rated zoo among all examined participants and since then has shown itself to be “Germany's best small zoo”.
