The Herborn Zoo (formerly Herborn Bird and Nature Conservation Park ) in the Uckersdorf district is an animal park with around 300 animals from 80 species from all over the world. The zoo participates in various conservation breeding programs and nature conservation projects. It is visited by around 41,000 visitors every year.
history
The bird park was founded in 1966 by an association. In 2002 it was converted into a non-profit GmbH and a scientific management established. The GmbH provided 219,000 euros in the 2015 budget to expand the area of the zoo to 2.45 hectares and to create additional enclosures with animals that are attractive to visitors. On January 1, 2017, the bird park was renamed the zoo .
Livestock
In the Herborn zoo there are z. B. meerkats, muntjacs, kangaroos and tiger monkeys as well as a vivarium with python, elephant jumper, fire salamander, stick insect and yellow-bellied toad. An outdoor terrarium with local grass snake, dice snake, viper snake and sand lizard, a pond turtle pond and a guinea pig enclosure complete the animal population.
In addition, around 60 species of birds are kept, including some highly endangered species such as the balistar or the great soldier macaw . The stock also includes red ibises , Asian beos , satyrtragopans , various types of cockatoo and many other exotic species, but also greater flamingos , eagle owls , bearded owls and snowy owls . The animals are kept in partially accessible aviaries and outdoor facilities.
In addition to the extensive animal population, nature relationships are also illustrated. Herborn zoo used to run a release project for white storks .
Attractions
There is commented feeding of the Lisztaffen, parrots and meerkats. For children's birthday tours, u. a. the meerkats are fed.
