Animal welfare controlled

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Animal welfare-controlled is a seal of approval developed by the University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences in Vienna and Vier Pfoten for animal welfare standards for farm animals in agriculture. According to the animal welfare organization , it is the first seal of approval that also takes into account conditions for the transport and slaughter of animals. The seal of approval was introduced in Germany in 2012.

Requirements

The "Animal Welfare Control" seal of approval is awarded in two stages. While the silver award aims to raise the quality standards in the conventional area in principle, high standards of species-appropriate animal husbandry such as outdoor exercise and, depending on the animal species, grazing are required to receive the gold award.

The following basic requirements apply:

  • larger space (access to daylight and exercise)
  • Animal-friendly barn structuring (no permanent fixation)
  • GMO-free feeding
  • Limitation of transport times
  • Strict requirements for slaughter

parameter

"Animal welfare controlled" parameters provide information about the state of health of an animal and allow conclusions to be drawn about the effects of the housing system. Two parameters are used to assess animal welfare. Resource- related parameters relate to the housing environment and the resources that are made available to the animal. Animal-related parameters are measured directly on the animal and take the animal's environment into account.

Control system

On-site at the farm and at the slaughterhouse , it is checked whether all criteria from the guideline for the corresponding animal species and level of the quality label are met. Compliance with the criteria is checked at least once a year by state-approved inspection bodies. In the case of minor violations, a deadline is agreed in which deviations can be corrected. Larger deviations lead to immediate, temporary exclusion from the quality seal.

The consumer initiative association classifies the "animal welfare-controlled" seal of approval as "a demanding label that contributes significantly to improvements in the production of meat and dairy products and above all particularly promotes animal welfare" .

Products

The Dutch poultry producer Plukon Food Group was the first company to use the seal of approval . "Animal welfare-controlled" certified products are available from Rewe in the Merkur and Penny stores , as well as Spar , Denn's Biomarkt and Edeka .
