Tigre (people)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Tigre ( Italian Tigrè or Tigré ) are an ethnic group in Eritrea . Tigre make up 30 to 40 percent of the population there. They are not to be confused with the Tigrinya .

Their language is also called Tigre and, like Tigrinya, belongs to the Semitic languages . It is written with the Ethiopian script , but also with the Arabic script.

The Tigre inhabit the northern highlands and the western lowlands of Eritrea, as well as the south of the neighboring Sudanese state of al-Bahr al-ahmar . The great majority of them profess Sunni Islam , which, like in neighboring Sudan, contains popular religious beliefs . Some Tigre are followers of the Sufi order of the Khatmiyya .

Tigre live mainly as farmers in small villages in round houses or practice semi-nomadic cattle breeding.
