The white-headed heron ( Tigriornis leucolophus ) is a species from the heron family. The species occurs exclusively in Africa. It is the only representative of its kind. The American genus Tigrisoma is considered a sister genus .

Appearance

The white pint-free heron reaches a height of 66 to 80 centimeters. The white head is usually hidden by the dark feathers of the back of the head and is only visible when the heron rears it up. The top of the head and the neck of the white-headed tease are black. The beak is long and slender. The upper beak is black-brown while the lower beak is yellow-green. The wax skin is green and the irises are yellow. The sides of the head, the neck, the back and the upper wing covers have fine black and red-brown stripes. The tips of the wings are white. The underside of the body is only slightly lighter than the upper side and has a similar, fine stripe pattern.

Distribution area and habitat

The white pint-free heron occurs in the tropical rainforest of West Africa. Its distribution area extends from Senegal, Guinea-Bissau, Guinea, Sierra Leone, Liberia, Ivory Coast, Cameroon, Gabon to Zaire. In addition to tropical rainforests, it is also found in gallery forests along rivers and mangrove rivers on the coast.

Way of life

The way of life of the Weißschopfreiher has so far only been inadequately investigated. The food spectrum is probably very large. What is certain is that these include small fish, crustaceans, frogs, snakes and insects. All that is known about reproductive biology is that it builds its nest in tall trees in a solitary manner.
