Tilmen Höyük
Royal Palace (1800–1600 BC)

Tilmen Höyük is an archaeological site in Turkey in the İslahiye district of the Gaziantep province . The place houses a Middle Hethical palace on a small citadel surrounded by a lower town.

The Höyük is located on Karasu near the village of Yelliburun and has a diameter of 200 m. The site was discovered in 1958 by U. Bahadır Alkım . Excavations took place between 1959 and 1964 and 1969 to 1972. Between 2003 and 2008, an Italian-Turkish team led by Nicolò Marchetti worked on the site again.

According to Bahadır Alkım, Tilmen Höyük was in the 18th century BC. The center of one of the 20 small kingdoms that formed the kingdom of Jamchad . He also dates the palace found in Layer IIc to this time. When the Hittite great king Ḫattušili I led a campaign in the Amuq plain and against Aleppo , Tilmen Höyük was destroyed in a major fire. In the 15th-14th Century BC In his opinion, a local kingdom once again existed in BC (Layer IIb / IIa). He dates the mighty surrounding fortress wall to the late second to the beginning of the first millennium BC.
