Timothy Andrew Barnett (born August 4, 1958 in Rugby , United Kingdom ) is a New Zealand politician .

Life

Barnett was in 1958 in the English born rugby. After school in England, he studied economics at the London School of Economics and graduated in 1981. Barnett was active as an LGBT activist in the UK, particularly in the Stonewall Lobby Group .

In 1991 he moved to New Zealand with his partner. He took New Zealand citizenship and ran for the New Zealand Parliament . In 1996 he was elected to Parliament for the Christchurch Central district of the New Zealand Labor Party and re-elected in 2005. Barnett did not run again for the 2008 general election. In 2004, during his parliamentary term, New Zealand passed a law establishing a civil partnership . Barnett was a Member of Parliament's political support for this legislation and in 2003 also campaigned for the legalization of prostitution in New Zealand.

Barnett has been Labor Party's general secretary since 2012.
