Jackson designs an economic model in his works that gets by without growth . He is calling for an adaptation of the ruling capitalism , which is based on constant growth and "in complete contradiction to our scientific knowledge about the finite resource base of our planet and the fault-prone ecology on which our survival depends". He advocates the development of an economy that relies heavily on services and locally produced sustainable goods.

This development provides for reduced working hours , which on the one hand increase the well-being of the employees and on the other hand are intended to reduce the continuous, growth-generating increase in productivity ( growth critique ). Advertising on public television should be drastically restricted. More investments should be made in public goods such as museums, parks and educational institutions. It is important to Jackson "that people are offered viable alternatives to the lifestyle as a consumer."

“Living a good life on a finite planet cannot consist of consuming more and more goods, nor of accumulating more and more debt. Because if the concept of prosperity is to have any meaning, then it has to target the quality of our lives and our relationships with other people, the adaptability and resilience of our communities and our feeling for what means something to us individually and collectively.
