Time sharing option

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Time Sharing Option ( TSO ) is an interactive command line interpreter for IBM - mainframes - Operating Systems z / OS . Under TSO, each user has their own address space that is not visible to other users.

TSO for OS / 360 was released in 1971 and was originally used on typewriter terminals. With the breakthrough of the IBM 3270 screen terminals , it became possible to develop full- screen applications that almost completely replaced the command line ( ISPF , RPF).

In 1974 it was expanded to TSO / E ("Time-Sharing Option / Extensions") and became part of the OS / 390 and MVS operating systems .

The TSO commands can be used in a simple scripting language CLIST , which is being replaced more and more by the much more flexible REXX .

TSO is the main tool for system administrators and program developers on mainframes running under z / OS .
