Timothy Kurek is an American author and writer of the book Cross in the Closet .

Life

Kurek comes from Nashville , Tennessee in the so-called Bible Belt and is a graduate of the evangelical Liberty University . As a homophobic evangelical Christian, Kurek pretended to be homosexual for a year and processed his experiences in his book. Kurek reports that he had already been told by his Christian scout group to be careful of homosexuals and that they are all HIV- positive, perverts and left-wing pedophiles . Kurek got the idea to rethink his ideas about homosexuality when he came across the activist group SoulForce in 2004, and again later when a friend revealed she was a lesbian to him and reported that her family had disowned and disinherited her . Kurek's change of perspective led to a radical rethinking and received considerable public attention. That said, Kurek's publication has sparked controversy among LGBT stakeholders because of his deception. However, the experiment was not the first of its kind and is reminiscent of Black like me by John Howard Griffin and Self-Made Man by Norah Vincent.
