Tinkerforge is a platform of different microcontroller components (bricks) that can be plugged onto one another and which can control different modules (bricklets). In addition, the modules can be expanded with extensions (master extensions). The hardware can be connected using APIs (API bindings), which are implemented in a large number of programming languages, or directly with TCP / IP via a USB connection (under Windows , Linux or Mac OS X ), via WLAN (with WIFI Master Extension ) or via LAN (with Ethernet Master Extension). Both the hardware and the software are open source .

The computer magazine Chip named Tinkerforge 2012 “Product of the Year”.

Bricks

Master Brick with WLAN extension

Bricks are 4 × 4 cm large circuit boards for the evaluation of measurement data, for the communication of the components and for the control of motors. Each brick has a 32-bit ARM microcontroller, a USB port and connections for additional bricks or bricklets.

It is possible to stack several bricks together in order to get more possibilities. A master is required for such a stack.

Bricklets

Bricklets are extensions of Bricks. They provide means for inputting and outputting data. Many Bricklets are sensors, but there are also LCD Bricklets or those that have digital inputs and outputs.

Master Extensions

Master extensions extend the interfaces of bricks. Like bricks, they have a size of 4 × 4 cm. There are extensions for WLAN , Ethernet and RS485 . From a programmer's point of view, the various communication options are transparent. A stack with a master extension behaves as if all bricks were individually connected to the PC via USB.
