Tipula lateralis is a mosquito from the family of the Schnaken (Tipulidae).

features

The snakes reach a body length of 13 mm (males) or 16 mm (females). They have a wingspan of 14-17 mm. When at rest, their wings are spread out. A light longitudinal band on the upper side of the abdomen is characteristic of the species . In addition, the gnats have a thin black line drawing that starts at the eyes and runs over the thorax . Another characteristic of the species of gnat is the dark colored veins of the wings.

distribution

Tipula lateralis occurs in large parts of Europe and is quite common. The species is also represented in the British Isles. In the east the distribution area extends to the Middle East .

Way of life

The snake species can be found in humid biotopes, especially on the banks of ponds and streams. The gnats can be seen early in the year. They usually fly from March to October. The semi-aquatic larvae develop in ponds and streams. They feed on rotting vegetable matter.
