The Tiroler MuseumsBahnen (TMB) association takes care of the maintenance and / or documentation of the historically valuable Tyrolean local railways and their rolling stock.
The Tiroler MuseumsBahn generally means three areas:
- The Tyrolean Local Railway Museum in Innsbruck
- A vehicle collection that includes some of the most historically valuable vehicles of the Tyrolean local railways
- An association whose members look after the Localbahnmuseum on a voluntary basis, restore and revise historical vehicles and organize special trips with the operational vehicles and publish the magazine "Lyra" every six months.
history
After it finally became clear in 1983 that the 79-year-old railcars of the Stubaitalbahn should be parked, the “Tiroler MuseumsBahnen” association was founded in May of the same year with the aim of preserving these historically valuable vehicles for posterity. If things didn’t look very good for accommodation for the club, thanks to some advocates in politics, including the then mayor Niescher , the former shed facilities and part of the Stubaital train station (waiting room and transport service) could be won over to the club. The Localbahnmuseum opened in early summer 1985. In order to create space for more vehicles, most of the sidecars of the Stubaitalbahn were first loaned out and then sold. In 1986 an Igler railcar as well as some Igler sidecars and some freight wagons of the Stubaitalbahn were added to the collection. In 1989 the first vehicle - freight car 32 of the Stubaitalbahn - was restored to its original condition. To date (end of 2012) 17 other vehicles - some in the delivery condition - have been refurbished to be operational, and a few more vehicles have already been taken over as operational. In 1991 the 100th anniversary of the Innsbruck tram was celebrated together with the Innsbrucker Verkehrsbetriebe. Around the turn of the millennium, the now dilapidated coach house from 1903 was completely renovated. In 2000, Innsbruck and the surrounding communities celebrated the 100th anniversary of the Innsbruck Mittelgebirgsbahn and in 2004 the 100th anniversary of the Stubaitalbahn. In October 2008 the 25th anniversary of the Tiroler MuseumsBahnen was celebrated with active participation from the politicians of the state of Tyrol and the city of Innsbruck.
The local railway museum
The Localbahnmuseum is located in the former Stubaital train station at the foot of the Bergisel , next to the current depot of the Innsbrucker Verkehrsbetriebe. It was opened in 1985 after the Stubai Valley Railway was converted to direct current and the rooms for the dispatcher and waiting room were no longer needed. Since then, the local railway museum has developed into a sight for railway enthusiasts from all over the world and is well frequented. In summer, a historic train set regularly drives into town to take tourists to the museum. The exhibition includes the following local railways:
- Achenseebahn
- Bolzano tram
- Local Dermulo – Mendel railway
- Dolomite Railway
- Fiemme Valley Railway
- Val Gardena Railway
- Innsbruck low mountain range railway
- Innsbruck transport company
- Local train Innsbruck – Hall i. Tyrol
- Local railway Lana – Burgstall – Oberlana
- Local railway Lana – Meran
- Merano tram
- Mittenwaldbahn
- Local train Mori – Arco – Riva
- Renon Railway
- Stubai Valley Railway
- Tauferer Bahn
- Local railway Trento – Malè
- Überetscher Bahn
- Vinschgau Railway
- Zillertal Railway
To this end, special exhibitions that change annually are organized on the individual regional railways and some publications dealing with current topics are issued.
The vehicle collection
The vehicle collection is housed in the old Remise of the Stubai Valley Railway in Innsbruck. In 1983, the collection only included Stubaitalbahn vehicles that were parked, but the collection was expanded over time. Vehicles from other local railways were bought and brought (back) to Innsbruck. At the end of 2017, the collection comprised 27 vehicles (11 locomotives, 10 sidecars, 4 freight cars, 2 snow bends) from four local railways and a tram company:
- Innsbruck low mountain range railway
- Innsbruck transport company
- Local train Innsbruck-Hall i. Tyrol
- Renon Railway
- Stubai Valley Railway
The collection includes some unique vehicles, including the only operational cogwheel locomotive of the Rittner Bahn with the TMB, and the first single-phase AC multiple unit can also be found here. Most of the vehicles are over 100 years old and some have also been returned to their delivery condition. A special feature of this collection is that almost all vehicles are operational.
