The Stubaitalbahnhof was built in 1903 and was the terminus of the Stubaitalbahn in Innsbruck until 1983 . Since 1983 the trains coming from Fulpmes have passed the train station and continued through the city of Innsbruck. Colloquially, a distinction is made between the "Old Stubaitalbahnhof", which means the station area and building from 1904, and the "New Stubaitalbahnhof" as today's depot of the Innsbruck transport company .

Originally, the station next to the Brennerstrasse at the foot of the Bergisel was signposted with the Wilten-Stubai sign, as Wilten was not incorporated into the municipality until 1904. At that time the goods depot, the train station with the kiosk, the waiting hall and the transport service as well as the two-track Remise of the Stubaitalbahn were located on the station premises. The remise was soon expanded by a track, as the vehicle fleet was greatly expanded due to the high volume of transport. The goods depot was demolished in 1974 after goods transport on the Stubai Valley Railway was stopped.

After the conversion of the Stubai Valley Railway to direct current in 1983, the station was no longer needed and the track system on the Remisen forecourt was removed. The Tiroler MuseumsBahnen - a newly founded association at the time - got the building so that the vehicles could be preserved there as a museum. The Localbahnmuseum was set up in the former dispatcher management and the waiting room. Over the years, a new track harp was laid on the forecourt and a connection to the existing network of the Innsbruck transport company was established. In 2000 the Remise was completely renovated.

In the summer of 2007, the Stubai Valley Railway could not be brought into the city center due to maintenance work on the switches in the depot of the Innsbruck Transport Company, which is why the old Stubaital Railway Station was reactivated for a few weeks after 24 years.
