Titan Clydebank is a hammer crane in the Scottish town of Clydebank in the council area of West Dunbartonshire . In 1989 the building was included in the Scottish List of Monuments in the highest category A.

history

In 1871, the Glasgow- based shipbuilding company John Brown & Company moved to Clydebank. A building dock was added to the shipyard established there between 1890 and 1914 . In 1907 the crane, later known as the "Titan Clydebank", was installed at the end of the dock by the Glasgow crane and bridge builder Sir William Arrol & Company at a price of £ 24,600 . Since cranes with a comparable load capacity were only available in a few locations, the crane was assigned a significant share in the economic success of the shipyard. Although the crane was a primary target of the Luftwaffe during the Clydebank Blitz during World War II , it remained undamaged. After the bankruptcy of the Upper Clyde Shipbuilders, which resulted from the merger of several shipyards, in 1972 the crane was decommissioned. Most of the outbuildings have since been demolished. As of 2005, the Titan Clydebank was restored for around £ 3.5m and opened to visitors in May 2007, 100 years after completion.

During its operating hours, the Titan Clydebank was involved in the construction of numerous well-known ships. Including the cruise ships Queen Mary , Queen Elizabeth and Queen Elizabeth 2 . Royal ships like the Britannia and warships like the Hood were also built there.
