Titi Islands or Muttonbird Islands , officially Titi / Muttonbird Islands , is the name for five not directly connected groups of islands near Stewart Island / Rakiura in the extreme south of New Zealand . Administratively, they belong to the Southland region .

The northeast group lies in the Foveaux Strait northeast of Stewart Island, between this island and Ruapuke Island . A small group to the east, south of the Eastern Cape of Stewart Island, is also called the Breaksea Islands . The Boat Group is located near the coast in the southwest of Stewart Island . A little further west Mokiti / Little Moggy Island and Mokinui / Big Moggy Island. Another group of islands around Taukihepa / Big South Cape Island is about eight kilometers south . Some other islands south and east of Stewart Island are sometimes counted among the Muttonbird Islands.

The islands are not permanently inhabited. They got their name because of the traditional harvesting of shearwaters ( māori Titi; English : Muttonbird) by the Māori April 1 to May 31 The right to harvest the shearwater chicks is - with a few exceptions - reserved by law to the Rakiura Māori.

In May 2006, the Kotuku fishing boat capsized near Womens Island , killing six people.
