description

Tlingit armor

A Tlingit armor is usually made of bone or wood . The bones of whales or walruses are sawn into oblong, rectangular strips and processed smooth and these individual parts are then connected to one another. They are put together in several layers and thus form a breastplate that is held on the shoulders with straps . This construction is flexible in itself and is tied at the back. Some versions are additionally covered with thin seal leather and thus form a kind of brigantine . In contrast to metal armor, armor is relatively light and can be made from materials that are readily available to the Inuit and Tlingit .
