To Love and Be Loved

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

To Love and Be Loved is a song by Jimmy Van Heusen (music) and Sammy Cahn (lyrics) that was released in 1958.

Van Heusen and Cahn wrote To Love and Be Loved for the film Damn they are all (AKA: Some Came Running , 1958) directed by Vincente Minnelli . Shirley McLaine , Dean Martin and Frank Sinatra , who also introduces the song, play the leading roles . Van Heusen and Cahn received an Oscar nomination in the category Best Song for the song in 1959 .

In the lyrics, “to love and to be loved” is evoked as the meaning of life that “makes a sad heart sing and gives birds wings”.

Frank Sinatra released the song as a single in 1958 ( Capitol F4103, coupled with the song No One Ever Tells You by Carroll Coates and Hub Attwood) and on his Capitol album All the Way . Cover versions of the movie song were also recorded by Dinah Washington with the Hal Mooney Orchestra, Ray Anthony , Dusty Springfield , Jack Jones ( Where Love Has Gone , 1964), Jane Morgan ( London 45-HLR 8810) and Lem Winchester during this period . The pianist Harold Mabern recorded an album of the same name . After To Love and Be Loved was largely forgotten, the song was performed in the 1999 New York revue Our Sinatra: A Musical Celebration by Eric Cornstock.
