Toba (Tennō)
Toba ( Japanese 鳥羽 天皇 , Toba-tennō ; * February 24, 1103 ; † July 20, 1156 ) was the 74th Tennō of Japan (1107-1123). His proper name was Munehito (宗仁).
He was a son of Horikawa -tennō, but was raised by his grandfather, Shirakawa -tennō. While ex-Tennō Shirakawa was still alive, he actually ruled, and Toba was only Tennō in name. After Shirakawa's death in 1129, he finally held the de facto government and kept it as an ex-Tennō after his abdication in 1123, as his grandfather had done.
The Tennō Sutoku , Konoe and Go-Shirakawa were his sons.
