After post-doctoral positions at the Universities of Cologne, Bamberg and Luxembourg , he completed his habilitation in 2012 at the Saarland University with a thesis on the spatial effects of European integration in conceptual terms ( point, line, surface - territorialized Europeanization ). Since March 2012 he has been Professor of Geography with a focus on regional development at the Friedrich-Alexander University Erlangen-Nuremberg.

Research priorities

The main focus of research on regional development is aimed primarily at two aspects:

On the one hand, the focus is on the European dimension of regional development. European influences are often particularly visible in the area of regional, transport and environmental policy. European aspects also play a very important role in cross-border integration. Closely related to this are the debates about territorial cohesion and European planning perspectives. In the analysis of processes of Europeanization, approaches of regional development are linked with concepts of political geography, political science and social geography.

Second, the focus is on applied questions of regional development, particularly with regard to metropolitanization, economic development and demographic change. These questions are primarily pursued in the regional environment of the University of Erlangen. The cross-border integration between Bavaria and the Czech Republic plays a major role here. In this context, Chilla worked on the development report for the Bavarian-Czech border region on behalf of the Bavarian Ministry of Home Affairs.
