Tochinoumi Teruyoshi ( Japanese 栃 ノ 海 晃 嘉 ; born March 13, 1938 in Inakadate , Aomori Prefecture , Japan as Hanada Shigehiro ( 花田 茂 廣 )) is a former successful sumo wrestler and the 49th yokozuna .

Career in sumo

Tochinoumi belonged to the Kasugano-Beya , which was particularly successful in the 1950s and 1960s , to which the former yokozuna Tochinishiki and Tochigiyama also belonged.

After his debut in September 1955, Tochinoumi rose to the Jūryō Division in about 3½ years and reached the Makuuchi Division a year later in March 1960 . He stood out for his technical achievements, which were reflected in six Ginō-Shō (special price for good technical performance).

He achieved his first tournament victory at the summer tournament in 1962 and was then promoted to Ōzeki . A year later he was promoted to 49th yokozuna after a 13-2 in September and a 14-1 in November (this tournament he won). Although he managed to win another tournament in May 1964, he was always in the shadow of the two dominant yokozuna Taihō and Kashiwado at the time .

Although he was a good technician, it turned out that it was difficult for him to assert himself as a yokozuna, which was probably also due to his low weight of around 110 kg. So it happened that he announced his resignation at the end of 1966 at the age of only 28. After his active time he was still a coach of the Kasugano-Beya and took over the Kasugano share of the Sumo Association after the death of Tochinishiki in 1990. In 2003 he gave this share to the former Sekiwake Tochinowaka due to age.
