Togodumnus

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Togodumnus († 43 AD) was a king of the British Catuvellaun tribe during the time of Roman rule in Great Britain . He is possibly identical to the legendary King Guiderius .

Togodumnus was narrated in the Roman history of Cassius Dio , after whom he was a son of King Cunobelinus . He had two brothers, Adminius and Caratacus .

According to Cassius Dio's lore, Togodumnus led the original resistance to the Roman invasion and was killed during the Battle of the Thames . The Roman general Aulus Plautius is said to have buried him on the Thames in order to then continue his advance on the capital of the Catuvellaunians - Camulodunum ( Colchester ). The British tribes stubbornly continued to oppose the Romans, now under the leadership of Caratacus.
