Catuvian moods

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Catuvellaunen (Latin Catuvellauni ) were one of the most powerful Belgian tribes in Britain at the time of Julius Caesar . The Belger were a group from northern gaul originating Celtic tribes . The name possibly goes back to Cassivellaunus , their leader and adversary of Caesar at the time.

history

The Catuvellauni were one of the most powerful, if not the most powerful, Belgian-Celtic tribe in Britain during the time of Julius Caesar. They inhabited the area immediately north of the Thames . Their capital was located near what is now Wheathampstead . 54 BC BC, during Caesar's first campaign to Britain, they played a decisive role in the resistance against his troops. However, they were defeated and conditions were imposed on them before the Roman legions withdrew to their winter quarters in Gaul.

Caesar does not mention the Catuvellauni as a tribe, but as a Celtic alliance of resistance against his own troops led by a Cassivellaunus.

After the Romans had translated to Gaul at the end of the summer of 54 BC. Chr. The Catuvellauni defeated the already beleaguered by them, but now under Roman protection Trinovantes with capital Camulodunum ( Colchester ). They became a tribe of their own and subsequently expanded north and northwest, where they established a new capital at Verulamium , near St Albans . With this gain in influence, they gradually became a threat to Roman interests.

They were defeated in a second Roman campaign in 43 AD (almost a hundred years later), this time officially led by Emperor Claudius .

In 49 AD Colchester became a Roman veterans' colony and the administrative seat of the Imperial Governor for Britain.

Culture and economy

The Catuvellauni were wealthy and practiced agriculture .
