Tolbooth from Dysart

The Tolbooth of Dysart is the former Tolbooth of the former Burghs Dysart , which is now part of the Scottish town of Kirkcaldy in the Council Area Fife . In 1971, the building was included as an individual monument in the Scottish list of monuments in the highest monument category A. A former additional classification as a Scheduled Monument was lifted in 2001.

history

In 1549 Dysart was made a Burgh of Barony . The associated Tolbooth was built in 1576. In 1592 the tower received a tower clock. The town hall was added in 1617. The front staircase is also from this year. The town hall also housed the weighing house, a guard house and the prison. In 1656 an explosion devastated the upper floor of the town hall. It was only rebuilt in 1707. The upper floor of the tower was rebuilt in 1744. The cost of this was £ 499. The clocks that have survived to this day were installed in 1876. In 1885 Douglas & Sellars revised the town hall.
