Toluquilla

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Toluquilla is a late classical ruin in the Mexican state of Querétaro in the southern part of the Sierra Gorda .

location

The archaeological site, located on a narrow ridge at an altitude of approx. 2470 m, is approx. 8 km (as the crow flies) southeast of the small town of San Joaquín .

history

The place experienced its first heyday in the 5th / 6th centuries. Century, about which little is known because of later developments; a second followed and lasted until the middle of the 14th century. The ruins were first described, measured and photographed by North American mining engineers at the end of the 19th century. Archaeological investigations and restorations took place from 1987-88.

The sides of the ridge are secured by retaining walls and terraces. The preserved and partially restored buildings consist of numerous rectangular platforms for buildings made of perishable material as well as four ball playgrounds and a few low pyramids and circular wall circles. All masonry consists of natural stone slabs that have been installed without any special finishing. The location on hard-to-reach terrain indicates the need for protection against the threat of war. The basis of life was agriculture on terraces laid out on the mountain slopes as well as the mining of minerals, especially cinnabar .

Others

Toluquilla shows clear similarities with the ruins of Las Ranas, which is only 14 km (driving distance) away, as well as with numerous other, inaccessible sites in the vicinity.
