Tomàs Aguiló i Forteza (* 1812 in Palma ; † 1884 ibid) was a Mallorcan poet , writer and journalist .

Life

Born in Palma in 1812 as the son of Tomàs Aguiló i Cortès , also a Mallorcan poet, he was inspired by the conservative thoughts of his father at an early age and wrote numerous prose. His role models were Chateaubriand , Manzoni and Balmes , among others . He wrote his works both in Catalan and in his mother tongue, the Majorcan dialect spoken in Mallorca .

In 1832 he became famous for his ode to the Spanish conquest of Mallorca. In 1840 he founded the magazine “ La Palma ” with Josep Maria Quadrado and Antoni Montis , which was of great importance for the Catalan literary scene in the 19th century.

In the years 1846 to 1850 he published three volumes of poetry with different verses. Poesies fantàstiques followed in 1852 and the stories A la sombra del ciprés in 1863 . Further works were published posthumously , a total of eight volumes.

He was a member of the Reial Acadèmia de Bones Lletres de Barcelona .
