Tom Jennings (* 1955 as Thomas Daniel Jennings in Boston , Massachusetts ) is a Los Angeles-based artist and technician. He is the founder of FidoNet , the first message and file transfer system for BBSes . Initially, the FidoNet protocols were implemented in a program called Fido, written by Jennings, but they were eventually implemented in other software by other authors to create a network that could be used by multiple OS platforms.

In addition to creating the most influential protocol for networked computers, BBSes, Jennings created the first website for Wired magazine, wrote the portable BIOS that led to the Phoenix Technologies BIOS, and ran an early regional Internet service provider called The Little Garden ( later trading as TLGnet, Inc), and maintains an informative archive on science and technology of the Cold War .

Jennings currently resides in Los Angeles , California with partner Josh Stehlik. He is a faculty member on the Calarts Art + Technology program, and also works as a technician on the Arts Computation Engineering graduation program at the University of California, Irvine .
