Tom Middendorp

Tom Middendorp (born September 6, 1960 in Rheden ) is a Dutch general and was in command of the Dutch Armed Forces from 2012 to 2017 .

Life

Tom Middendorp was born in Rheden , in the province of Gelderland . In 1979 he joined the armed forces of his home country and began his officer training at the Dutch Military Academy in Breda .

Military career

After various other assignments at home and abroad, Middendorp was promoted to lieutenant general in January 2012 . Six months later, on June 28, 2012, he was appointed general and military commander of the Dutch armed forces. On October 3, 2017, he and the then Defense Minister Jeanine Hennis-Plasschaert resigned after a critical report by the Investigative Council for Security regarding a mortar accident during the military mission in Mali in which two soldiers died. Rob Bauer was his successor .
