Tomago aluminum smelter

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Tomago Aluminum Smelter is located in Tomago , eight miles west of Newcastle , New South Wales , Australia . The aluminum smelter is located about 13 km west of Newcastle in the Hunter region .

The smelter has a capacity of 520,000 tons of aluminum annually. It is operated by the Tomago Aluminum Company , a joint venture in which Rio Tinto Alcan is the majority shareholder with 51.6% of the shares. Furthermore, the companies are Gove Aluminum Finance Ltd ( CMR Limited and AMP Limited ) and Hydro Aluminum involved.

The aluminum smelter started operations in 1983 with a capacity of 240,000 tons of aluminum per year, in 1993 the capacity was increased to 380,000 and in 1998 to 530,000 tons.

Aluminum smelters are large-scale industrial plants that use smelting electrolysis to produce aluminum from aluminum oxide using a lot of energy . In the Hall-Héroult process , pure aluminum is obtained from aluminum oxide using fused- salt electrolysis. Here, aluminum with a melting temperature of 2045 ° C is mixed with cryolite in order to lower the melting temperature. In this process, the melting temperature can be lowered to 950 ° C, which enables electrolysis. This aluminum smelter, like all such smelters, is in operation 365 days and cannot be switched off.
