Tomani (spelling variant: Tomana , Tumane , Tumana ) was a historical empire in what is now the West African state of Gambia .

history

The empire was one of the nine Mandinka empires on the south bank of the Gambia River from the early 18th century to the mid 19th century . It extended in the northwest to the empire Jimara , in the southeast the empire Kantora was neighboring.

From 1732 there are two historical maps with the titles " A map of the River Gambia from its mouth to Eropina " and " A map of the River Gambia from Eropina to Barrakunda ". On this the course of the Gambia from the confluence in the Atlantic Ocean to Deer Island and then from this to Barrakunda is drawn. Tomani can be found on the second part of the map.
