Tomato is an alternative firmware for some WLAN - router based on the Broadcom based chipset. Tomato is a modification or extension of the original Linksys firmware. To compile Tomato, the Linksys firmware source code is required in addition to the source code available on the Tomato website.

Tomato can be installed in place of the manufacturer's pre-installed firmware. It is a lean Linux distribution that offers additional functions compared to the manufacturer's firmware and can be adapted more flexibly. Among other things, Secure Shell access ( BusyBox , Dropbear ), an easy-to-use graphical user interface with statistics displayed as SVG , IPP2P , Wake On LAN , Quality of Service , different wireless modes, e.g. for bridging , support for wireless distribution are provided System and a CIFS client. Unlike many original firmwares, most of the Tomato settings are adopted without restarting.

From version 1.24, Tomato also supports the NAT Port Mapping Protocol .

Which router types are currently supported can be seen on the manufacturer's website.

Similar firmware alternatives include OpenWrt , DD-WRT , FreeWRT , HyperWRT Thibor , Tarifa or X-Wrt .
