The Tomblin rock is an isolated cliff rocks in the archipelago of the South Sandwich Islands in the South Atlantic . It is 1.1 km east-southeast of Demon Point on Candlemas Island .
Scientists from the British Discovery Investigations mapped it in 1930 and profanely named it Black Rock (English for Black Rock ). In order to avoid confusion with objects of the same name, the UK Antarctic Place-Names Committee decided in 1974 to rename it. The new namesake is the geologist John Frederick Tomblin from the University of Oxford , who carried out detailed surveys of cliff rocks around Candlemas Island for the British Antarctic Survey in 1964 .
