Tommaso Laureti or Tommaso Laureti Siciliano (* around 1530 in Palermo , † September 22, 1602 ) was a Sicilian painter.

Life and works

Laureti was trained by Sebastiano del Piombo . After the death of his teacher, he settled in Bologna . Works from this period include Alexander the Great , a painting in which his interest in illusionistic perspective designs can be clearly seen. He created a painting of St. Augustine for the Church of San Giacomo Maggiore. The best known, however, is probably the Fountain of Neptune in Bologna, the basic design of which goes back to a drawing by Laureti from 1563.

From 1582 Laureti lived and worked in Rome . There is a death of Susanna above the high altar of the Church of St. Susanna. But works of non-Christian content have also been handed down by Laureti: Several frescoes in the Conservator's Palace show highlights of Roman history, such as the judgment of Brutus , Horatius Cocles in the defense of Pons Sublicius , the victory at Lake Regillus and Gaius Mucius Scaevola in the dispute with Porsenna . The triumph of Christianity in the Sala di Constantino , which he under Pope Gregory XIII , bears witness to his lifelong preoccupation with the possible effects of the central perspective . began and completed under Sixtus V.

He could no longer complete an altar painting in the Basilica di San Prospero in Reggio nell'Emilia . It was finished by Ludovico Carracci .

Office and aftermath

In 1595 Laureti became the second director of the Accademia di San Luca after Federico Zuccaro . There is also his posthumously painted portrait, which Orazio Borgianni created in 1603.
