Tommaso Stenico

Tommaso Stenico (* 21st January 1947 in Borgo Valsugana , Province of Trento , Italy ) is a Roman Catholic priest, university lecturer, author and former Kurien prelate .

Life

After finishing school, Stenico studied Catholic theology . On March 18, 1971, after graduating, he received the sacrament of ordination . 1972 doctorate he attended the Pontifical University of St. Thomas Aquinas to Dr. theol. and in 1976 also obtained a doctorate in psycho-pedagogy from the University of La Sapienza . From his ordination to 1978 he worked as a pastor. In addition, he worked as a religion teacher in state schools until 1981. From 1978 to 1994 he was chairman of the diocese's own institute for religious studies.

On January 1, 1981, he began his service at the Roman Curia and later became a member of the Congregation for the Clergy . Pope John Paul II awarded him the title of Honorary Prelate of His Holiness . He is also Magistral Chaplain of the Sovereign Order of Malta and Commander of the Order of Knights of the Holy Sepulcher in Jerusalem . As a theologian and editor, Stenico published several works, including Il Concilio Vaticano II: Carisma e Profezia . Among other things, Stenico was responsible for the Petrus website .

At the beginning of October 2007, Stenico got into international media coverage. On an Italian television show in October 2007, Stenico stated that he did not feel guilty about having sex with other men. Despite his face being made unrecognizable, he was identified after the broadcast. The Pope's judicial authorities then launched an investigation; Stenico was initially suspended from his position and his website Petrus was taken offline. Stenico stated a few days after the TV show that he was not gay and that the TV show "had been lured into a trap".

In his further statement, Stenico explains that he was writing a book about homosexuality and Catholic priests and that he was secretly investigating it. According to his own statements, he wanted to investigate "whether there is a control center ... a strategy ". In his suspicions about a "present [n] obvious and open attack against the church" he wants to see himself confirmed: "There really is a diabolical plan of Satanist groups that target priests."
