Tommy Olivencia

Tommy Olivencia (born May 15, 1938 in Santurce , Puerto Rico , † September 23, 2006 in San Juan , Puerto Rico), whose real name is Ángel Tomás Olivencia Pagán, was a Puerto Rican salsa musician. Tommy Olivencia shaped the music style of Salsa Boricua and Música Tropical and influenced artists such as Marvin Santiago, Paquito Guzmán, Lalo Rodríguez , Gilberto Santa Rosa , Frankie Ruiz and Hector Tricoche in his more than 30 years of activity .

Life

Tommy Olivencia started out as a singer at the age of 16. He later played the trumpet and took over the direction of various combos. His first orquester in the 1960s was called Tommy Olivencia y La Primerísima Orquesta de Puerto Rico. Since 1978 he has worked with four trumpeters and two trombonists, who created an idiosyncratic style of music, together with melodic components and swing. Olivecia produced for various mostly own record labels such as Tioly, Inca Records, Capitol / Emi Latin or TH (TopHits) Records. Since 1990, Tommy Olivencia and his orquester have been one of the most popular salsa groups in Puerto Rico. His first singers were Chamaco Ramírez and Paquito Guzmán, of whom Guzmán later began a career as a solo performer. Shortly after the song "Alive and Kicking" was released, Chamaco Ramírez died after drug abuse.

From 1975 to 1976 Paquito Guzmán was the second singer in the band Tommy Olivencia y su Combo and was one of the trendsetters for the salsa romántica or salsa erotica music style in the mid-1980s. The music of Tommy Olivencia set the trend for many talented salsa artists. Among the greatest successes of Olivencia were songs like “Planté Bandera”, “El Negro Chombo”, “Evelio y La Rumba”, “Lobo Domesticado”, “Lapiz de Carmín”, “Viajera”, “Primero Fui Yo”, “No Tires La Primera Piedra ”u. a., which were often covered by later singers and groups. After suffering from severe diabetes, Tommy Olivencia died of heart failure in 2006.
