The Tegucigalpa Airport (Spanish Aeropuerto Internacional Toncontín , IATA code : TGU ; ICAO code : MHTG ) is the international passenger airport of the Honduran capital Tegucigalpa .

particularities

The airport, which was built in 1948, is one of the most demanding airfields in the world for a number of reasons: the runway is comparatively short at 2163 meters; before it was expanded in May 2009, it was only 1863 meters long. Added to this is the height of 1000 meters above sea level, which means that aircraft need a longer take-off and landing distance than at lower altitudes. In addition, landing approaches and take-offs must be completed at a steeper angle than usual, as the airport is located in mountainous terrain. A hill just before the start of the runway was removed in 2007. In difficult weather conditions, the pilots often have to switch to San Salvador or San Pedro Sula . The largest type of civil aircraft that regularly operates here is the Boeing 757 .

Those responsible have been considering relocating the airport for years. After the accident in May 2008 declared President Manuel Zelaya that his cabinet laying on the military airfield Soto Cano the US Army in Comayagua consider draw, which is 65 km northwest of Tegucigalpa. This airfield is currently mainly used for drug cultivation reconnaissance flights, but has the best runway in the country with a length of 2,700 meters.

Incidents

  • On May 30, 2008, an Airbus A320-200 of the Salvadoran airline TACA (EI-TAF) crashed on landing. The aircraft collided with several motor vehicles after racing past the end of the runway. Among the five fatalities was the Nicaraguan Harry Brautigam , President of the Central American Development Bank BCIE , who did not succumb directly to the accident, but only later died of a heart attack in a hospital .
  • On May 22, 2018, a Gulfstream G200 (N813WM) crashed while landing with a crew of two and five passengers on board. The plane overshot the runway, fell down a slope at the end of the runway, and broke in two. The inmates were slightly injured in the incident.
