Tonkin Island is a north-south extension 5.5 km long, narrow and icy island off the Bowman coast of Graham Land on the Antarctic Peninsula . It is located 18 m southeast of Choyce Point in the middle of the Larsen Ice Shelf . An ice-free summit marks the two ends of the island.
Scientists from the United States Antarctic Service Expedition (1939–1941) discovered and photographed the island from the air. The Falkland Islands Dependencies Survey (FIDS) carried out the mapping and naming in 1947. Namesake is John Eliot Tonkin (1921–1996), who worked for the FIDS on Stonington Island from 1945 to 1947 .
