Battle of Trafalgar

The battle of Trafalgar was fought on October 21, 1805 between the British fleet under the command of Horatio Nelsons and the French and Spanish ships at Cape Trafalgar. The British served the 104 gunship HMS Victory as their flagship. The vastly superior ship Santissima Trinidad was the largest in Vice-Admiral Pierre Charles de Villeneuve's fleet. The Tonnant was far inferior to its opponents with 26 other ships. The Spanish-French Armada had 2,864 cannons on 33 ships. But despite this inferiority, the British were able to win the battle because Nelson, contrary to the usual tactics, attacked the English ships in two rows. The Tonnant was fourth in the right row. Nelson was hit by a musket ball and died. In the end, the Spanish and French had about ten times as many deaths as the British.

The British fired congreve missiles from the HMS Erebus and mortar shells from the HMS Terror , the HMS Volcano , the HMS Meteor , the HMS Devastation and the HMS Aetna . Since this did not cause any major damage, the British had to withdraw.
